Why Do Nerds Suddenly appear…

One of the best things about comic conventions is people from varying backgrounds can find commonality. That commonality is a love of comics, art, and pop culture. In some cases, even nerd love is found. Niagara Falls Comic Con even helped expedite love connections via Super Sonic Speed dating.

This year’s comic con even featured the marriage of Keith Gillam and Amy Zupan–proprietors of the best comic book store in Niagara, Freakshow Comics. Resplendent in the their Joker and Harley Quinn costumes, Keith and Amy were joined in ballroom A of the Scotiabank Convention Centre by hundreds of their Freaky Friends and Family

Pastor Daniel Calcagno of Glad Tidings Church in Fonthill led the unconventional marriage ceremony in which Keith vowed to “put two in [Amy’s] head” if she ever snitched on him and Amy gladly offered to help hide the bodies provided “[Keith does] the digging.”

Pop Culture: A Great Equalizer for Nerd Love

A love of all things nerdy brought two love birds back together. Keith and Amy have known each since childhood. Only recently did they realize they were meant to be partners in crime, business, and love. It reminded me that cons such as the Niagara Falls Comic Con allow people to be themselves.

Deep down everybody is nerdy or obsessed, if you will, about something. For some, it’s comic books and their creators. Others see it as an opportunity to meet the star of your favourite tv show. For all, it’s about finding a safe place to be share your passion with others.

I don’t know the stats of how many people find love or great friendships because of comic cons, but I would imagine the numbers look good. Just like the Gillam’s and their kiddos.
